The spec does not mandate buffer limits for tee(). And to be fair, the spec allows implementations to implement the actual internal mechanisms for tee()and other APIs in any way they see fit so long as the observable normative requirements of the specification are met. But if an implementation chooses to implement tee() in the specific way described by the streams specification, then tee() will come with a built-in memory management issue that is difficult to work around.

Code runs in a strict sandbox where the only allowed operations are calling functions provided by the host. If the host doesn’t provide a file reading function, the WASM module simply cannot read files. The failure mode here requires a vulnerability in the WASM runtime itself, like an out-of-bounds memory read that bypasses the linear memory checks.
Git packfiles use delta compression, storing only the diff when a 10MB file changes by one line, while the objects table stores each version in full. A file modified 100 times takes about 1GB in Postgres versus maybe 50MB in a packfile. Postgres does TOAST and compress large values, but that’s compressing individual objects in isolation, not delta-compressing across versions the way packfiles do, so the storage overhead is real. A delta-compression layer that periodically repacks objects within Postgres, or offloads large blobs to S3 the way LFS does, is a natural next step.
